Pre- and probiotics

A network on pre- and probiotics was established during the project "Unlimited Health" in 2006-2007. Meetings, conferences and collaborative applications were some of the network’s actions. This gathering of excellent competencies is frequently used in the project "Healthy Growth" (2008-2011) in order to share knowledge and combine forces across borders.

Why is pre- and probiotics and the gastrointestinal tract so interesting?

The common area of work is the gastrointestinal tract and the huge impact it has on human health. New hypotheses emerge, for example that the function and reaction of the gastrointestinal tract is linked to the development of obesity and allergy. Also, the knowledge on pre- and probiotics, and the effect on human health, is increasing.

Winter School 2008-2009

A major activity within this field was a Winter School in 2008-2009 with the topic “The role of the gastrointestinal tract (GI) for development of allergy and obesity” (approved as Ph.D. course). The Winter School resulted from network activities and scientific discussions, and it aimed at obtaining a common understanding of scientific issues and identification of further research needs. Six seminars evolved around this theme during the autumn/winter 2008-09, and resulted in a large collaborative application for an alliance. Unfortunately the application was refuted. Find overall information here and contact the Healthy Growth secretariat if you are interested in the specific seminars.
