Food for elderly

Food and meals are important for all age groups but becomes increasingly important for those elderly people who are dependent on being provided with food and meals. This can for example be elderly in own homes, in elderly homes and in hospitals. The risk of becoming malnourished because of lack of appetite due to for example serious illness and loneliness is present and must be taken very seriously.

Snack Meals in hospitals

In 2006-2007 a network on Snack Meals in hospitals pilot tested a snack meal concept on hospitalised patients who were lacking in appetite (poor eaters). A lot of experience came out of that pilot test. The most important lesson learned was that it was more or less impossible to exclude refrigerated or frozen foods from the snack meals - the patients who most often were elderly had difficulties with eating the provided snack meals such as nuts, crackers, chocolates etc. Today the network functions as a "gathering of excellent competencies" with good possibilities of finding contacts for new projects, locating existing experiences and identifying new project partners.

Discussion forum on Food for Elderly

A small discussion forum has risen from the previous network on Snack Meals for poor eaters. Regular meetings take place in order to exchange knowledge and experiences, and to debate on relevant themes regarding Food for Elderly. This discussion forum is expected to decide on specific projects and activities to work on in the future.
