Phospholipids

Phospholipids are highly diverse lipids with a high potential for improving public health. They offer great possibilities for development of ingredients for foods with health benefits. Examples are the potential use of phospholipids for transport and release of cancer medicine, increasing the absorption of omega-3 fatty acids in the developing brain, and stabilizing omega-3 fatty acids against oxidation. In addition phospholipids have a number of functionalities such as for example as emulsifiers in different foods.

The history of the Phospholipid Network

The Phospholipid Network has existed for several years. The network has focused on constructive networking, exchange of knowledge and generation of new research projects on the determination and utilisation of the healthy and functional properties of different phospholipids. The network has attracted competencies from especially the Nordic countries within academia and companies.

Examples of activities

The Network meets on a regular basis in order to network but certainly also with the aim of creating common collaborations and applying for funding for research projects. A number of successful research applications have seen daylight during the life span of the network.

A lot of seminars and conferences have been held during the past years. A few of the most recent activities are mentioned here:

- October 2008: "Phospholipids. Nutrition, Application & Technology" (2-day International conference)

- February 2008: Innovation in the Phospholipid Network (1-day internal workshop in order to increase innovation in the Network)

- March 2009: "Seafood & health (ingredients) - What is the full story for the consumer and industry?" (1-day International seminar)

- June 2009: "25th Nordic Lipid Symposium" (3-day International conference)
