Fast Food on the Menu
Food has to be easy
The debate day "Fast Food on the Menu" was opened by the minister Henrik Høegh, setting the stage for the days theme. New statistics from Danish Retail Institute show, that 43 % of Danes choose fastfood 1-3 times pr. month.Young and single people in particular choose the quick meal and pizza is the first choice on the list.
Women still driving force in the kitchen
Sisse Fagt from DTU carried on pinpointing the 3 biggest trends for the Danes food habits. These are:
- Fast Food
- Health
- International Food
Not to mention the fact, that 2 out of 3 meals are still planned by women, making them the biggest target group on the market.
Booming market for semi-fast food
Fast food products are often high in salt and fat and low in real nutrients and fibre. In other words, they are not very healthy and in most cases, they also have an "unhealthy" reputation. For young people that have not learnt to cook, convenience is a low status compromise. Sisse Fagt sees a booming market for partly manufactured fast food products, that give the consumer a chance to provide the meal with his or her own special touch.
Snacking Culture
Frederik Wiedeman from Red Associates looks to the other side of the big pond - to the US, in order to predict where the danes' food habits are heading. Snacking culture in the US is huge and snacks are becoming the Americans main source of food. If the Danes are heading this way, healthy snacking products may become a big seller on the Danish/Scandinavian market. Frederik also spoke of a growing market for segmentet fast food aimed at fx. children and men.
