Recruiting to the Øresund Region
Øresund IT has been focusing on identifying some of the issues that are of high relevance to the companies, universities and public authorities in the ICT industry in the Øresund Region. One issue which has been raised continually is the major demand for qualified employees. Therefore, Øresund IT has initiated a project together with two of the largest development companies within ICT, Microsoft Development Center Copenhagen and Sony Ericsson, in order to recruit talent to the Øresund Region.
Cooperate to recruit
The purpose of the project is to pool the recruitment efforts of companies towards Eastern Europe in order to attract potential employees to the Øresund Region. This will make it easier to attract the attention of the possible employees because they have a security in knowing that there are many job opportunities and if one job is unsuitable another will be available.
The idea behind the project is that if companies combine their recruitment efforts the total number of potential candidates will increase. Instead of recruiting for just one company the recruitment is for the Øresund Region, and ultimately this provides more job opportunities for the individual candidate and a more qualified workforce to choose from for the individual company. Another part of the project is branding the region as an interesting location with high capabilities within the ICT industry.
Overcome lack of qualified talent
The background for the project is the lack of qualified talent in the Øresund Region, which has great impact on the IT companies in the region. This is not a situation, which can be solved through education in the short run. Therefore, this is a pilot project to test if it is possible to solve the situation here and now by recruiting from other parts of Europe and the rest of the world. Initially, the recruiting will only take place in one country and later on, if the pilot project is successful, the recruiting will be extended to other countries.
Poland’s got talent
Poland was chosen as the first country where a recruitment campaign would be launched. This was due to Poland’s talents within the IT industry and their high level of education. Furthermore, Poland is located close to the Øresund Region geographically and therefore the travel distance to a new job in the Øresund Region is manageable. The recruitment campaign ran during May/June 2008 in newspapers and online. Besides from rising awareness of IT job opportunities it also resulted in many direct enquiries to both Sony Ericsson and MDCC.
