Recent project developments
Having finished the preliminary mapping of existing policy and integration initiatives in relation to international students and researchers who are non-EU nationals, we have developed various working hypothesis to explore further – in the quest of improving the circumstances for transnational entrepreneurship in the Øresund Region.
- The communication of policy is unclear and it seems as if entrepreneurship is not sufficiently recognized when it comes to work permits. The combination of entrepreneurship and non-EU citizens is rarely mentioned and information is hard to come upon, not to mention the aspect of transnationalism and the benefits of collaboration in the Øresund Region. Hence, we hypothesize that a mapping of the possibilities for a non-EU citizen (student or researcher) to start a business in the Øresund Region may reveal various barriers with regards to the formal structure and existing policy. This could be merely a question of incomplete dissemination of information, or it could amount in a proposal of new solutions and frames.
- The initiatives in terms of integration and inclusion of talents with the goal of talent retention are many. However, there may be too many to keep track of. And the focus seems not to be directly incorporating the target group of transnational entrepreneurship. Hence, we hypothesize that another initiative could be planned and implemented as a supplement to existing initiatives in the informal/social arena. This could help make existing initiatives more visible and include international students and researchers more in the process. As with the former hypothesis and the likely development of suggestions we may end up with initiatives that reach a broader target group than our project was intended for, but as long as we help the transnational entrepreneurs, the added benefits are kindly welcomed!
We are currently continuing the exploration and mapping of the policy-, integration-, entrepreneurship-, and Øresund landscape, gathering insight and input from stakeholders and identifying possible partners. We will keep you updated…

- The initiative related to the formal structure:
Having met with relevant actors on the Danish and Swedish side and verifying various working hypothesis, it has become clear to us that an Entrepreneur Visa may be just what the Øresund Region needs.
With input from international students, we are firm in our belief that this is not a “phantom problem” i.e. one that is only a problem in theory. There is a demand for a change, as there are non-EU internationals who wish to start a business here.
It seems plausible that engaging in a formal phase of empirical research on the need and research on current context barriers with a proposed solution as a result to be presented to policy-makers, is the direction Øresund Entrepreneurship and designated partners should take. If this solution should become the Entrepreneur Visa, a format will be proposed building on e.g. learning lessons from other countries who have instigated similar visas.
- The initiative related to the informal/social context:
Having met with relevant actors on the Danish and Swedish side and verifying various working hypothesis it has become clear to us that a concept such as “the human library” can be transformed to match the needs of not just our target group, but also a larger group, who can benefit from mutual inclusion and social networking between Øresund residents and internationals.
A Human Entrepreneur/Expat Libraryseems a fitting proposal for facilitating cultural/social and personal learning, mutual inclusion, understanding, networking and the breaking of barriers to making international students and researchers feel welcome, at home, and encouraged to stay and start a business in the Øresund Region. These events will be designed together with a partner and information will be disseminated so stakeholders will know what this concept is all about.
- Partnerships:
We are currently partnering up with organizations and authorities on the Danish side, and strive to achieve the similar partners on the Swedish side, as the Øresund perspective provides additional power to the initiatives. It is highly likely that the initiatives and the partnerships will entail accomplishments for a broader scope than the potential transnational entrepreneurs, which is viewed by us as an added bonus.

The phasing out of Øresund Entrepreneurship regrettably entails that we no longer can (nor are allowed to) further develop the project Transnational Entrepreneurship. Sadly, it also signifies that the project is terminated from our side, in spite of the fact that it proved to have high relevance and received broad support.
Of course, we are working on finding a way in which current results and planned initiatives can live on in another regime. We are in contact with central partners, who have expressed a will to continue in some shape or form, as it is our wish that the knowledge collected in this project does not go to waste. This project could have large value for international students and researchers who want to start a business in The Øresund Region, as well as other entrepreneurial talents coming to this region.
I hope the thoughts behind this project continue to flourish in many ways so the subject area receives the interest and support it deserves.
We appreciate any suggestions and input, should you have thoughts and ideas you want to share with the goal of continuing with the good intentions behind this project. Any questions are also welcome.
