Wireless technologies
In the waves of a wireless future
Mobile, wireless, portable, small form factor, the anywhere network – whatever technology we choose, the Øresund Region has it. With large private and public development centres, both in the applications field and in the design of new handsets and infrastructure components, the Region is one of Europe’s most important clusters of wireless research and development.
The Øresund Region’s companies and institutions carry out research in most of the technologies that are driving the wireless revolution around the world. Their efforts not only aim at getting the best from the current wireless technologies that are making the 3rd generation but also at shaping the future generations of wireless devices, applications and networks.
Bluetooth
The Øresund Region cuts the cords between digital devices.
The Øresund Region is not only the birthplace of the Bluetooth, the technology that is becoming the global de facto standard for short-range wireless connectivity. It is also a strong development centre of products and services based on the technology that cuts the cords tying up digital devices.
Bluetooth, named after the Danish Viking called Harald Blåtand, was created by Ericsson at Ideon Science Park, in Lund, in close collaboration with Intel, IBM, Toshiba and Nokia. The standard allows communication transfer between digital apparatuses.
Other companies and research institutions in the Region immediately saw the commercial possibilities created by the innovation and started to develop products based on the Bluetooth technology. The result is that the Øresund Region has become a fertile ground for breakthroughs in the development of Bluetooth products and services, such as the first commercial Bluetooth print server, launched by Axis Communications in 2001.
