Rødbyhavn is chosen as the production location for the standard tunnel elements for the Femern connection

The Parties behind the fixed link across the Femern Belt has decided to follow Femern A/S recommendation as to locate the production of standard tunnel elements in Rødbyhavn.

In November 2010, the European Commission published a new interpretation of the VVM Directive. The new interpretation implies that the environmental approval of the Femern Belt link and needed production space for the establishment of the fixed link is linked and part of an overall approval process. Moreover, it implies that Femern A/S will designate specific areas where production can be placed. Contractors are then required to utilise the selected areas.

On 26 May 2011 Femern A/S sent their recommendation to the Danish Transport Minister regarding Rødbyhavn as the designated production space. The company's clear assessment is that Rødbyhavn is the most appropriate location among the more than 20 sites that have been studied. The production of the standard tunnel elements provides employment for an average of approx. 2,000 persons per year during the 6 ½-year construction period.

The Danish Transport Minister Hans Christian Schmidt says:

-I am glad that the parties has come to an agreement today endorsing Fehmarn A/S recommendation to locate the production of standard tunnel elements to the Femern Belt link in Rødbyhavn.

- It shows the seven settlements parties strong support for the project.
