Difficult admission for foreign students
New Swedish admission procedures close the door on foreign university students
The implementation of new admission procedures turns out to be a hindrance for student mobility in the Øresund region, as Danish and other non-Swedish students get their applications for university studies in Sweden rejected regardless of their merits.
The new admission system in Sweden separates students in four groups. One of these is for students with foreign high school diplomas. For each subject the number of admissions for each of these four groups is distributed proportionately to the number of applications in these groups. This means that if very few foreign students apply for a specific subject there will be no admissions for foreign students in that subject.
These new rules have been questioned during the spring by Øresund Org and several other parties. This is to a large extent because they do not seem to be compatible with Nordic and European agreements on equal access to higher education. But the inflow of foreign students and the diversity they represent in the university environment is also a value in its own right, and losing this asset in the future will be a major loss for the Swedish universities. The Swedish government, however, have not been responsive to all of the critical voices.
And now the rejections on applications from foreign students, including Danish students in the Øresund region, start turning up in the mailbox…
