A catalyst for growth and innovation

Logistics in the region

Location, location, location

The Øresund Region consists of the eastern part of Denmark (Zealand) and the southern part of Sweden (Scania). The Øresund Region is one of the most dynamic regions in Europe and is developing rapidly. The area generates a quarter of the total GDP of Sweden and Denmark.
Connecting Sweden and Denmark is the Øresund Bridge, which is the direct link between Copenhagen and Malmö and is integrating the region also in physical terms.

Logistics is an important industry in the Øresund Region and the need for integrated logistic services is obvious, as the region’s geographical location makes it a natural gateway to the Baltic Rim and a hub for Northern Europe.
Some of the drivers for locating or expanding logistics and other activities to the region are:

  • Highly developed intermodal infrastructure with little congestion
  • Close access to new markets, e.g. the Baltic Rim.
  • Well equipped transportation and other logistics services
  • Advanced information and communication systems
  • Low rent for premises and ample supply of free land
  • Access to people with the right education and competencies
  • Large and growing local markets through the increasing integration between Denmark and Sweden

Through collaboration between the Danish and the Swedish distribution systems the logistics services can improve and simultaneously lower costs, not only for the Øresund Region but also for the entire region of Scandinavia. Many companies have already centralized their Nordic operator into one central distribution location in the Øresund Region, and have hereby acknowledged the benefits the region provides, both in intangible and financial ways. Best practice of companies who have done this show reduced logistics cost of up to 50%.

The Øresund region offers Scandinavia’s strongest concentration of research resources. With approximately 150,000 students, 6,500 Ph.D students and 12,000 researchers, the region has good basis for positioning itself as "The Human Capital of Europe".
In the Øresund Region you find one of the largest concentrations of highly educated people in Europe and the region is home to an innovative environment and a collaborative working relationship between industry, universities and the authorities.

All these strengths combined establish the Oresund Region as a highly competitive logistics hub in the European Union with a vast development potential.

People employed within logistics in the Øresund Region:
Scania: 22 000
Zealand: 54 000
In total 77 000

As listed above, approximately 77.000 people are employed within the sector of logistics in the region.
