Advanced telecommunications services
To provide individuals and organisations outstanding and affordable telecommunications services, the Swedish and Danish governments have chosen the same policy: to encourage competition through the liberalisation of their telecommunication markets. The policy has given excellent results - in the Øresund Region, households and public and private organisations can rely on one of the world’s most developed telecom and data infrastructures.

The advanced level of the IT and telecom market in the Øresund Region is illustrated by the high penetration of broadband connections in Sweden and Denmark. According to the Internet measurement firm, NetValue, Sweden and Denmark are the leading countries when it comes to households with broadband Internet connections in Europe. They are also European leaders in fixed telephony penetration, with respectively 709 and 707 fixed telephone lines per 1,000 inhabitants, according to the World Competitiveness Yearbook 2001.

Falling prices
Increasing competition on the Danish and Swedish telecommunications market has led to falling prices for services. At the same time, consumers’ freedom of choice has improved, and increasingly better and more advanced telecommunications services are available in the market.

According to surveys conducted by the European Union, Denmark and Sweden offer some of the lowest European charges for local and international telephone calls. In addition, when choosing service providers, users have a wide array of alternatives. As an instance, in both countries, people can choose between more than five voice telephony providers.
