Sustainable Fuels and Chemicals from Bio-Mass

Øresund Environment has in cooperation with Scandinavian partners launched a project on Environmental and Biotechnological Research and Development in the Scandinavian-Baltic Region. The first activity to be developed is a project on bio-fuels and in particular bio-ethanol.

The purpose of the initiative is to create a network between academic researchers and industry in the Baltic area and Scandinavia. The network should facilitate the start-up of new projects within research programmes in relation to bio-fuels and specifically bio-ethanol. Hence, a priority within the network will be to attract funding through the creation of project applications on regional, national and EU level.

In June 2004, key researchers on bio-ethanol was invited by ScanBalt and Øresund Environment to join a core group of researchers. This core group now works as a formalised network named "Sustainable Fuels & Chemicals from Bio-mass -Baltic/Scandinavian network". Based on the work of the core group, other researchers and industry will be invited to come up with project ideas on bio-ethanol and bio-fuels. The ideas will be processed by the network and the relevant parties will be invited to join a ScanBalt project application.

Primary project participants:

The network is comprised of participants from Denmark, Finland, Latvia and Sweden:

  • BioCentrum, Technical University of Denmark, Denmark – Prof. Birgitte Ahring
  • Department of Chemical Engineering, Lund University, Sweden – Prof. Guido Zacchi
  • Latvian State Institute of Wood Chemistry, Latvia – Prof. Galina Telysheva
  • Plant Research Department, Risø National Laboratory, Denmark – Senior Research Scientist Anna Belinda Thomsen
  • Department of Product Engineering, VTT Biotechnology, Finland – Research Professor Liisa Viikari
  • VTT Biotechnology, Finland - Research Prof. Merja Penttilä

Related strategic areas and projects:

  • Bio-ethanol Norol (project)
  • ScanBalt Campus (project)

Øresund Environment has facilitated and financed the creation of the network and seminars on bio-ethanol (see related projects).
