Bio-Refinery Øresund
In the future the use of raw materials for chemicals, materials and energy should preferably be as CO2 neutral as possible. It should not impact the environment nor utilize potential food for humans. This requires that the oil, being the source material of the refineries, derives from plants. In order to refine oil from plants and use it for chemicals, materials and fuels, it is a requisite to establish bio-refineries.
The aim of Bio-refinery Øresund is to establish a pilot-scale bio-refinery and facilitate a transnational co-operation for development and implementation of bio-refinery processes in the Øresund Region.
The Øresund region has a number of actors working separately with parts of the refinery processes. By bringing together project partners covering all aspects of the bio-refinery processes, from examining biomaterials via conversion to a product to exploring the life cycle analysis of all (sub) processes, the project will increase and diversify the level of knowledge about bio-refineries, their environmental benefits and the growth potential they represent for the Øresund region, among commercial stakeholders as well as political decision makers/regional authorities.
The research and test center of the pilot-scale bio-refinery offers the opportunity for the stakeholders to carry out trial tests, demonstrations, integration and evaluation of different technologies within the area of bio-refinery.
At the moment the region has very limited co-operation within Bio-refinery related research, development and educational activities. By bringing together project partners covering all aspects of bio-refinery processes, the project will expand and diversify the knowledge base on bio-refineries, their environmental benefits and growth potential for the Øresund region.
