Lund University introduces special admissions review
Aid for foreign students at Lund University
- Foreign students should not have to suffer just because there are flaws in the Swedish admission procedures. We have therefore decided to use a special review of applications for this group, says Lund University Vice Chancellor Per Eriksson in the light of recent criticism that the foreign students, despite top grades, are denied access to university education simply because they belong to the "wrong" selection group.
Both Swedish and Danish media have reported the situation where foreign students have been affected by the new Swedish admissions rules for the autumn term of 2010.
The special selection group which is available for applicants with foreign qualifications has been reduced significantly since the so-called IB programmes and other programmes no longer count as such. On courses with few places, this may mean that none of the students in the selection group are admitted, regardless of the candidates' qualifications.
The solution, according to Lund University, is a special admissions review for students with foreign qualifications.
- It certainly requires some extra work for our local admissions department, but the important thing is that it gives a greater fairness in credit assessment, says Bengt Lundell, president of the University Admission Board.
The formal decision has been taken by the Bureau of the admissions board and means that in some cases it will consider individual applicants' merit rating in the selection group with foreign qualifications, such as when no one in this group has been admitted. The admission staff will then look at the candidate with the highest merit rating in the group with foreign qualifications and compare this with the merit ratings of the students that have been admitted from other selection groups. The student's merit rating should be at least equivalent to those already admitted. By contrast, no special merit assessment will be done if someone has already been admitted from the selection group with foreign qualifications.
- Overall we estimate that about 75 students will be admitted in this way, says Bengt Lundell.
