Swedish app developers earn millions

Posted: February 08, 2011

During the first quarter of this year Apple has sold nearly 9 million IPhones, a doubling compared to the same quarter last year. In Sweden, 350.000 IPhones has been sold since they where launched about haft a year ago.

An important reason for this success is IPhone’s so-called apps. Apps are small applications and games that can be downloaded to the phone and thereby give it new features. Recently there has been a huge increase in the number of application developers – also in Sweden.

Today there are already a number of Swedish app developers who have managed to create success on the relatively newborn application market. An example of a real Swedish success, measured in number of downloads, is Swedish Illusion Labs who has created the game Labyrinth.

The application is based on the gravitational function of the IPhone and the idea is that you have to balance a ball in a labyrinth filled with pitfalls, just like the old physical board game. According to Illusion Labs their app has been downloaded ten million times and has over 300.000 users every day.

For the Malmö-based company Illusion Labs the revenue from the Labyrinth and their other games has resulted in a large profit on 18.7 million SEK. Carl Loodberg, CEO and founder of Illusion Labs says that Labyrinth is available in a free version and a pay version.

- The revenue from our different applications is enough to run our company and continue to develop new applications, says Carl Loodberg.

He believes that Sweden as a country has great potential to develop good and marketable applications.

- Many in my industry have a background from similar activities. As an example we have Sony Ericsson and the gaming industry which have provided us with knowledge and understanding within the area.
