How to build competitive clusters
Posted: February 10, 2011
This week a group of English rectors and professors where in Copenhagen to learn who to build clusters in collaboration between universities, the public sector and the industry. They believe that our model is admirable.

Øresund IT is one of the role model clusters using the triple helix model, which was the main reason why a group of high level university managers visited the Øresund IT and Food clusters. The group was specially interested in how the model works in reality and what type of challenges a cluster manager meets on a daily basis.
During the stay Micael Gusafsson, CEO at Øresund IT gave a presentation on how the ICT cluster in the Øresund Region has been successful in achieving support from the universities as well as the industry. Followed by the presentation was a group discussion where the challenges of navigating in different time frames in regarding the multiple stakeholders, was one of the topics.
- The industry typically runs in three-month cycles since it is influenced by their quarterly reports. So for a fast moving ICT Company 12 months is a long time. The public sector on the other hand tends to work within the mandate times for elections which requires three to four years planning. Finally the academic world usually works with a ten-year time frame with a revision every fifth year. It is of course a challenge making these three stakeholders work together on the same playing ground, says Micael Gustafsson, CEO at Øresund IT.
The group was really impressed by the way the clusters in the Øresund Region works and how we have built up knowledge about clustering during the past 10 years. As a result they have already planned a new visit by the end of 2011.
