The Swedish government in need of IT specialists
A report from the union ST conducted in collaboration with Computer Sweden, shows that the government needs IT specialists especially in the legal system and the higher education system. The labor market in this sector appears positive.
The public sector counting authorities, the higher educational system and governmental institutions will during the next five years need to hire between 4,800 and 5,100 IT specialists. That is the result of a report by ST; the union that represents public employees and who has investigated their part of the labor market.
- The need for IT specialists are unusually high compared to other professions, says Roger Syrén, in charge of the report from at ST.
There are several differences. First of all, the amount of new IT solutions in the government is rapidly increasing; and second, a great change of generation in the work force is ongoing.
- Despite that IT is a relatively new area, there are a lot of employees retiring from this sector within the nearest future. At the same time IT specialists will be amongst the first groups to be recruited when the cyclical change.
The jobs are mainly available in the legal system and at higher educational systems as universities. 21 percent of employers in the legal system has an urgent need to hire IT specialists and the number for same need in the education system is 15 percent.
ST advise and encourage the public employers to start recruiting sooner rather than later considering the business cyclical situation.
- It is important that the government are aware and moving now since the competition for IT specialists will only increase from now. You will have to act now, says Roger Syrén.
An employer announcing IT employees is IT Manager at Stockholm University, Lars Monnest, who agrees with many of the conclusions in the ST report. He focuses on positioning the university as an attractive work place, and advise other public institutions to do the same.
- We can offer quite a lot of advantages despite the fact that we cannot match the salaries of the private business sector. It is all about what values are important to you. With us you get a bit more freedom and not as stream lined in your work. We focus a lot on individual and personal development which fosters a creative environment, he says.
