The ICT industry in upswing

Posted: November 26, 2010

The ICT industry in the OECD countries is growing due to increased innovation. This is predicted by the organization in the recent report Information Technology Outlook 2010.

The ICT industry’s progress during recession turns out to be positive. Even though the growth in the OECD countries is six percent lower than in 2009. This year, the industry has grown by 3-4 percent, followed by a growth of 4 percent next year, predicts the OECD.

The main driver is a shift from cost control to focus on sales. This has increased the number of commercial projects. At the same time major effort to increase efficiency, such as consolidation and vitalization took place.

Despite the growth, it is unlikely that the ICT companies during the next years will reach the same high growth rates as where seen before the financial crisis. On the contrary, the report predicts that authorities and companies will hold back on their ICT investments. Investments in hardware and software is expected to be relatively weak in the near future.

However, there is an upswing in investment in emerging countries like China and India. There is increasing notably investment in mobile systems and telecommunications. Both services and equipment are expected to witness a substantial increase in the mobile industry.

Another area that the OECD highlights is online services. This area as experienced great increase during last year. One example is network and video games, where the global turnover in four years has doubled in value to 446 SEK.
