In a new rapport on the largest ICT clusters in Europe the Øresund Region is ranked number twelve. The rapport has been completed as a part of the EU funded project BrandIT.

-It is no longer a question of national ICT clusters. Today it is transnational, and this is especially striking in the Øresund Region, says Göran Serin who is a co-author of the BrandIT reports on ICT development in the Øresund Region.
Although the Øresund Region in practice has been an ICT cluster for a long time it has not been defined so by Eurostat, which is the EU's statistical office. The authors have chosen to rank the Øresund Region as the twelfth largest ICT cluster in Europe in terms of number of employees. Today the region has more than 90.000 employees in the ICT industry.
- Now we have placed the Øresund Region on the map, "says Göran Serin.
Looking at other criteria, the Øresund Region holds a stronger position compared to its closest competitors. With a large number of R&D workers, more than 1500 start-ups and a great number of foreign investments the ICT industry has continued to grow even during the global financial crises.
Today the largest ICT cluster in Europe is Paris,, with more than 600.000 employees in ICT. Hereafter comes, Cologne, Madrid, London, Milan and Rome.
That the ICT companies are centred in clusters in urban areas is natural, according to Göran Serin.
- First and foremost it is due to the large access to skilled labor, infrastructure such as airports and intimacy to the market, he says.
These factors can the Øresund Region also boasts of. On top of that both Denmark and Sweden is placed in top 3 in e-readiness and network readiness. Therefore the ICT industry within the Øresund Region has a great potential for creating continued growth.
