Posted: November 25, 2010
On Friday the EU will send up a satellite that will provide 20 million Europeans with broadband.

The Hylas 1 satellite is the first European satellite that is dedicated to provide broadband. It will also offer a number of conventional telecom services. Hylas is developed by the European Space Agency together with the telecommunications company Avanti. Hylas stands for Highly adaptable satellite and the idea is that the satellite can be used for many other purposes.
In addition to broadband the statelite will be used for HDTV broadcasts and future services in the data distribution. Hylas is also adaptable to future needs in both transmission and broadcasting of content from various media companies.
The satellite can handle so-called Ku-and Ka-band, which is frequencies that are targeted at specific European sites with high commercial potential. The idea is to offer low-cost services to the end users, at prices that can compete with terrestrial services.
After the satellite has been send up from Kourou in France the satellite will undergo a yearlong test and demonstration phase.
