DTU: Technological Tivoli
Posted: December 01, 2010
Yesterday visitors in Tivoli got a change to ride the Odinexpressen in a very different way. Researchers from DTU have been given the opportunity to use the attraction for a research experiment where they tested people’s ability to interact with a computer screen during turbulence.
At one of the wagons, the researchers have mounted a multi-touch screen with tasks that test persons have to solve during the 2 ½ minute long roller-coaster ride. The results of the test are being used to develop a comprehensive display for future cockpit. The display will replace the variety of monitors in the cockpit today.

The research experiment is a part of the EU project "ODICIS - One Display for a Cockpit Interactive Solutions" which is a cooperation between researchers from DTU Management and the aerospace industry to develop future display. Among the test persons was a pilot who contributed with knowledge of how turbulence in the attraction is in relation to turbulence on a plane. In the experiment, test persons were exposed to three types of touch interactions. "Tapping" where participants have to press various buttons on the screen, "dragging" where they must drag a figure from one point to another, and multi-touch interactions such as zooming in or out by using multiple fingers.
It is not the first time DTU has set up a collaboration with Tivoli. During the physics days in September 2010, DTU had invited high school students to a different school day in Tivoli where DTU students gave different presentations. This collaboration will continue in 2011.
