The IT-night inspires young people

Within the next few years the need of technical skilled workforce will increase dramatically. At the same time the number of applicants to engineering education is declining, this despite the fact that the amount of 19-year olds is on its height. The IT-night is an effort to reverse this trend.

In October 2009 Øresund IT and Mobile Heights, along with companies in the IT industry is to organize the IT-night. It will be a half day in which junior high school students from across Skåne may visit inspiring IT enterprises in and around Malmö and Lund. The day ends with a future event and a concert by a famous artist - which still remains secret.

- We hope that the IT-night will show the diversity in the IT industry and inspire to further studies within science and technology in high school, says Emmi Holmstedt, project manager for the IT-night 2009. But it will also be a really fun event where junior high school pupils will be able to get to know other students from all over Skåne.

The future event will be in the form of a trade fair where high schools, trade unions and other organizations may present themselves to the students. There will also be innovative companies that can present exciting new technology to inspire students for future studies. Those who are already on board include Sony Ericsson, TAT and Axis Communications as well as Malmö University and Lund Institute of Technology, but the IT-night is still looking for more businesses and organizations that wish to participate.

- This may be one of the most important issues for industry growth in the region, says Malin Ruijsenaars, Director Human Resources at Axis Communications in Lund. We welcome initiatives such as the IT-night and see it as part of our responsibility to ensure the growth of labor in the future.
