ANR2579E / ANS1512E:
“Return Code 12”

Problem:

This error is a bit tricky: it says that

“…this return code means that the error was severe enough to prevent the successful completion of the operation.”

In reality, though, the problem has never been “severe”. It usually pertains to a small number of files that for some reason cannot be backed up.

Consequence:

The affected files are not backed up.

Solution:

We currently do not have a solution for this. Additionally, we cannot see the details of this error on the server; only the log file stored on the client computer, dsmsched.log, has this information. Please note that in the local log file, the error shows up as ANS1512E (yes, we too find this confusing). It may be accompanied by ANS1028S.

Our recommendation is to look in the client log on your computer and try to find the failing file(s).

We believe the line marked in red is the troublesome file. And this particular file is no problem if omitted from the backup.
