Abstract:
During the life cycle of large systems two problems are often found:

dealing with a growing number of versions of a system component, and
building the system in different ways using different components.

These activities occur during both the initial development and the maintenance phase. Solving the related difficulties is often a simple and trivial task that, however, requires a lot of manual work and accuracy. Indeed, for its simplicity, this task can be automated.

In this talk we show how these problems have been approached, describing the evolution from simple stand alone tools such as make and SCCS, based on an underlying file system, towards more integrated systems based on a project database.
