Abstract:
The open source software (OSS) community has been playing an increasingly important role in the field of software engineering over the past few decades. Today, many large size companies from the traditionally proprietary software industry are opening up and embracing the OSS development process as a part of their business strategy. Despite the recognized potential the OSS community offers there are still many questions and unknowns related to OSS. This presentation will examine historical aspects of the OSS development, explain OSS micro-foundations and macro organization, and further explore OSS business models as well as discuss legal and IP issues surrounding OSS.
